Objective: To investigate the videos with information,suggestions,exercises,lifestyle modifications shared on
social media platforms for lymphedema during the pandemic process.
Materials and Methods: All Turkish videos published on social media platforms between December
2019-January 2021,in an advanced search engine,by using the keywords “lymphedema,lipedema,complex
decongestive physiotherapy(CDP),manual lymph drainage(MLD),exercise in lymphedema” were examined.The
subject and content of the videos,the profession of the presenter,target audience,display of the applications it
contains,security measures and accordance of preparer’s occupation were evaluated.
Results: The 33 videos met the criteria were analyzed.It was determined that the subjects of the videos were 73%
patient education,24% exercise and 3% physical activity.The contents were information(52%),exercise+lifestyle
change(12%), MLD(12%),exercise,MLD,information,compression,suggestion,CDP in 8 di erent combinations
(3%).73% of the videos didn’t include exercise information, di erent exercises were included in 21%,breathing
in 3%,strengthening and exibility exercises in 3%.76% of them targeted a diagnosis,21% of general and 3% of
geriatrics. The presenter was doctor in 39%,physiotherapist in 36%,nurse in 6%, physical education teacher in
3%,16% in others.When the compatibility of the video content with the profession was examined,it was found
that 64% were fully,18% were partially compatible and 18% weren’t compatible with the profession.Application
of the exercises wasn’t shown in 54%,explained partially in 25% and was showed in 21%.The security measures
weren’t included in 61%,present in 30% and 10% in partially.
Conclusion: Information on social media platforms,which become the only source of information about
lymphedema during the pandemic period,are focused on patient education and information,and is insu icient
to meet exercise information or individual needs.Although it’s prepared by experts for certain diagnoses and
generally in a content compatible with their profession,it has been determined that it’s insu icient in terms of
how to do the application and security measures to be followed.
