Summary
Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome in Patients with Obesity
Aim: Obesity is often associated with hyperlipidemia and other metabolic disor-

ders. Also it is one of the components of metabolic syndrome. Based on this reality we aimed to determine metabolic syndrome prevalence of obese patients.

Method: 90 patients having body mass index more than 35 kg/m2 and no his- tory of disease and no drug use were included to study. Patients' waist circumferen- ces, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol levels were measured. Diagnosis was made according to the Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Turkey Metabolic Syndrome Study Group diagnostic criteria.

Results: 84.4% of the patients (76) women and 15.6% (14) were males. The me an Body Mass Index (BMI) was 37.8 kg/m2 for all pati- ents, mean BMI of women patients’ was 37.7 kg/m2 and mean BMI was 38.5 kg/m2 in men. Metabolic syndrome was detected 50% of men and 47,3% of women. Body Mass Index was 38,58±3,2 in patients diagnosed meta- bolic syndrome and was 37,21±2 in others.

Conclusion: In the light of this data the frequency of metabolic syndrome in obese women was similar to ge- neral population, but in obese men it was detected two- fold more than general population. At the same time a significant increase detected that metabolic syndrome frequency increases with increased BMI.

Özet

Amaç: Obezite s›kl›kla diyabet, hiperlipidemi ve di¤er metabolik bozukluklarla bir- liktedir. Obezite ayn› zamanda metabolik sendromun (MS) bileflenlerinden biridir. Bu gerçekten yola ç›karak obez hastalarda MS prevalans›n› saptamay› amaçlad›k.

Metod: Bu çal›flmaya obezite poliklini¤ine baflvuran Beden Kütle ‹ndeksi (BK‹): 35 kg/m2 üzerinde olan, ek hastal›¤› ve ilaç kullan›m› olmayan 90 hasta al›nd›. Hastala- r›n bel çevresi, tansiyon arteryel (TA), açl›k plazma glukozu, trigliserid ve HDL koleste- rol düzeylerine bak›ld›. Bu hastalar›n Türkiye Endokrinoloji ve Metabolizma Derne¤i- nin; MS çal›flma grubunun önerdi¤i MS tan› kriterlerine göre tan›lar› kondu.

Bulgular: Hastalar›n %84,4 (76)’ü kad›n, %15,6 (14)’s› erkek idi. Ortalama BK‹: 37,8 kg/m2, kad›n hastalar›n ortalama BK‹: 37,7 kg/m2, erkek hastalar›n ortalama BK‹: 38,5 kg/m2 saptand›. Erkek hastalar›n %50’sinde, kad›n hastalar›n %47,3’ünde MS saptand›. MS tan›s› konulan hastalar›n ortalama BKI:38,58±3,2, MS tan›s› almayan hastalar›n ortalama BKI ise 37,21±2 saptand›.

Sonuç: Bu veriler ›fl›¤›nda genel topluma göre MS s›kl›¤›n›n obez kad›nlarda an- laml› olarak de¤iflmedi¤i ancak obez erkeklerde yaklafl›k 2 kat artt›¤› gözlenmifltir ay- n› zamanda BKI art›fl› ile MS s›kl›¤›n›n, istatistiksel olarak anlaml›, artt›¤› saptanm›flt›r.
