Nasofrontal Angle and Os Nasale Morphology In Male Skulls

Abstract
ABSTRACT
The apertura piriformis, which forms the bone entrance of the cavitas nasi, and the os nasales
and nasal cartilages, which form the upper borders of this entrance, constitute the nasal
skeleton. The morphometry of these structures, which form the back of the nose and the first
entrance of the respiratory tract, is important for respiratory function. Also, there's interest in
research on nose analysis, which includes both linear and angular nose measurements. The
aim of this study is to reveal the nasofrontal angle values and os nasale morphology measured
in male skulls.
41 male dry skulls registered in the inventory of Aydın Adnan Menderes University Faculty
of Medicine, Department of Anatomy were included in the study. After each skull included in
the study was photographed from lateral and frontal angles, the resulting images were
transferred to the ImageJ (version 1.54i) program and evaluated digitally. When the skulls
were examined from a lateral angle, the nasofrontal angle was measured. Morphological
examination of os nasales was done in 5 groups in accordance with the classification put
forward (done) by Hwang et al. in 2005, and through photographs taken from the frontal
angle.
When the skulls included in the study were examined, the smallest nasofrontal angle value
was found to be 101.16°. The largest nasofrontal angle value was 156.84°. The average
nasofrontal angle of 41 skulls was found to be 126.07°. When the skulls were evaluated
morphologically, 17 Type A, 3 Type B, 3 Type C, 3 Type D and 15 Type E os nasale were
found.
These data can serve as a database for male nasal morphology. This work will also aid
forensic investigations and anthropology.
