In this study, the environmental economic power dispatch problem in hydrothermal power systems has been solved by using genetic algorithm. In the process of solution, the use of the demanded amount of water by each of the hydraulic units has been provided as well as the minimization of total thermal cost and total NOx emission. In order to convert the environmental economic power dispatch problem, which is one of the multiobjective optimization problems, into a single objective optimization problem weighted sum method (WSM) has been used. Genetic algorithm (GA) method has been applied to single objective optimization problem for the solution. As an example, the solution of a lossy system with 16 buses consisting of thermal and hydraulic generation units has been given. Considering the one-day operation period of the sample system, solutions have been obtained for various values of weight factor w and the obtained total thermal cost and total NOx emission values (pareto optimal results) have been evaluated.
